Yesterday a fine actor and a great human being died. I'm talking about Leonard Nimoy, best known to the world as Mr. Spock, faithful companion to Captain Kirk in Star Trek. Back in the 60s, Star Trek was the product of the visionary mind of Gene Roddenberry, who created a show and a family of characters that would achieve cult-status in the decades to follow. The message of the show was amazing, the open-mindedness, the breaking of unjust, stale social standards was almost too much for American television. Almost. But thanks to the veiled excuse of it being Science Fiction, they managed to get away with ground breaking things like the first inter-racial kiss ever seen on tv.
Nimoy was not just part of all this, he was a very active believer in this message of love, peace and the need for change. He was a staunch defender of social rights for everybody, often fighting for equal pay for his colleagues who were discriminated because they were black, they were Asian, they were women. He was a strong supporter of gay marriage and the charity he created together with his wife raised money to help young artists.
He was a guide, a role model, not just as a character, but also as a person. And he has definitely left an amazing, positive mark on millions of fans worldwide. He can certainly rest in peace.
